His son, the Black Prince, became one of the period\u2019s most renowned commanders. Our special this issue takes a look at this extraordinary partnership.<\/p>\n<p>Edward implemented a series of radical reforms in English military organisation that turned his country into an armed camp and a launch-pad for successive attempts to make good the English monarchy\u2019s claim to the French crown. Central to this was a new tactical system of defensive linear warfare that combined \u2018bill and bow\u2019 \u2013 a system that delivered the extraordinarily one-sided victory at Cr\u00e9cy in August 1346.<\/p>\n<p>Also in this issue, we revisit General Wolfe\u2019s capture of Quebec in 1759. Sam Allison and Jon Bradley offer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-past.com\/feature\/wolfe-at-quebec-a-new-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a forensic analysis of Wolfe\u2019s underestimated brilliance<\/a>. We then have two very different WWII stories. Richard Selcer offers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-past.com\/feature\/the-worst-maritime-disaster-ever-the-sinking-of-the-wilhelm-gustloff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a detailed account of the greatest naval disaster of all time<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the sinking of the German passenger liner\u00a0<em>Wilhelm Gustloff<\/em>\u00a0in the Baltic on the night of 30 January 1945 \u2013 while James Morningstar\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-past.com\/feature\/the-philippines-1942-1945-the-resistance-and-the-return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discusses the Philippine resistance<\/a>\u00a0to the Japanese occupation between 1941 and 1945.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, William Stroock\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/the-past.com\/feature\/the-battle-of-chinese-farm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recounts the decisive Battle of Chinese Farm<\/a>\u00a0in the Sinai Desert in October 1973 \u2013 the armoured clash between Egyptian and Israeli forces
